Classroom Management
The core of a well-managed classroom is one where learning and exploration always come first. This is accomplished through building a strong classroom community where students understand what is expected of them and are genuinely interested in the well being of their classmates.
1. Clearly post and discuss classroom rules
2. Guide students toward a positive classroom environment through consistent expectations
3. Develop a mutually respectful relationship within the classroom
I have integrated elements of Love and Logic and PBIS into my classroom design. Please stop by my PBIS link for more information and how it is helping our students.
This past year at the beginning of the school year the students and I developed a list of rules and rationale for those rules. Then we summarized all of the rules students thought were important into three big ideas that we were able to post and remember. The following are the three big rules that were developed school wide that our rules fit under.
1. Respect yourself
2. Respect others
3. Respect property.
By going through and placing all of the rules that students thought were appropriate under these main headings, it helped students see the importance of the school rules.
Additionally, by following the PBIS standards of clearly explaining expectations and consequences/rewards for all common behaviors in the school day students started the year knowing exactly what was expected of them.

Bullying in the classroom
I define bullying for my sixth grade students as an unwanted, REPEATED behavior aimed at making them feel isolated, outcast, or negative about themselves. Bullying is not one isolated incidence of being mean, but rather a pattern of events.
I read once that children who are hurting want to make other children hurt. By creating a positive environment the desire is that all children feel better about themselves. It is also important to create a strong community within your classroom. If students really get to know each other they are either less likely to bully, or at least have a strong support system to help bullying not impact them as much.
